About us

A small kitchen in Lancashire

We make West African food for people who grew up on it and people who have never tried it. Same recipes for both.

Rated 5 out of 5 for food hygiene

What the rating actually means

Five is the top rating in the Food Standards Agency Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. It is not a badge we bought or awarded ourselves — an environmental health officer turned up, inspected the premises, and judged three things: how hygienically the food is handled, the physical condition of the building, and how well we manage and record food safety.

For a business selling food online that you cannot see being made, that independent check matters more than anything we could write about ourselves. It is a matter of public record and you are welcome to look it up.

How this started

Like most food businesses, this one started by accident. Cooking for family turned into cooking for friends, which turned into people we had never met messaging to ask whether we could do a tray for a christening. At some point it stopped being a favour and became a kitchen.

The recipes have not changed much along the way. The suya spice is the one we grew up with — groundnut-heavy, properly hot, the kind that stains your fingers. The pies are the ones sold on every street corner back home, which is to say generous with the filling and not shy with the seasoning.

What has changed is the paperwork. Registered premises, allergen records, traceability on every ingredient, and the hygiene inspection above. Less romantic than the cooking, but it is the part that lets us sell to you honestly.

What we make

Three things, done properly

01

The pies

Meat and chicken pies made the way they are made at home — proper seasoned filling, pastry with some substance to it. Sold in 2-in-1 packs for a lunch and 5-in-1 packs for a household.

  • Baked in small batches, not bought in and reheated
  • 2-in-1 packs for one or two people
  • 5-in-1 packs for a family or a freezer
  • Keeps three days chilled, three months frozen

02

The spice blends

Our Jitos range: suya spice for grilling and pepper soup spice for broths. Ground in small batches so they still smell of something when they reach you.

  • Suya spice — groundnut, chilli and northern Nigerian dried spices
  • Pepper soup spice — calabash nutmeg, uziza and grains of selim
  • No bulking agents and no anti-caking filler
  • Full ingredient list on request for allergies

03

Wholesale & events

Regular supply for shops and caterers, and one-off batches for weddings, naming ceremonies and office catering across the North West.

  • Standing weekly or fortnightly orders
  • Event batches with an agreed delivery slot
  • Trade pricing by volume
  • Full allergen and traceability paperwork

Questions

Things people ask us

How do I place an order?

Add what you want from the menu to your basket, then go to checkout and fill in your delivery details. That builds your order into a WhatsApp message which you send to us with one tap. We reply to confirm availability, the delivery charge and how to pay.

Why does the order go through WhatsApp rather than card payment?

Because almost every order needs a short conversation anyway — delivery timing, how many you actually want, whether you would rather collect. Doing that on WhatsApp is faster than a card form plus three emails, and it means you are talking to the person who bakes the pies rather than a support queue.

How much is delivery?

It depends on where you are and how much you order, so we confirm it on WhatsApp before you pay anything. We would rather quote you honestly than bake an inflated flat rate into every price.

What does the 5-star hygiene rating mean?

It is the top rating in the Food Standards Agency scheme and it means an environmental health officer inspected our premises and found hygiene standards to be very good. It covers how food is handled, the condition of the building, and how we manage food safety. It is a public record you can look up yourself on the FSA website.

Do the pies arrive frozen or ready to eat?

They arrive baked and ready. They keep for three days in the fridge and freeze well for up to three months. To reheat from frozen, twenty minutes at 180°C brings the pastry back properly — a microwave will heat them through but you lose the crust, which rather defeats the point.

Do you supply shops, restaurants and events?

Yes. We do regular wholesale runs for shops and caterers, and one-off batches for weddings, naming ceremonies and office events. Tell us rough numbers and a date on the contact page and we will come back with pricing.

Do you deliver outside Lancashire?

Yes, we send orders across the UK. Local deliveries around Preston and the North West are the quickest and cheapest; anywhere else goes by courier and we will quote you the cost before you commit.

What is in the spice blends?

The Jitos suya spice is a groundnut base with chilli, ginger and the blend of dried spices used across northern Nigeria. The pepper soup spice is a West African mix built on calabash nutmeg, uziza and grains of selim. Both are ground in small batches. If you have an allergy, message us before ordering and we will give you the full ingredient list.

Hungry yet?

The menu is short on purpose. Everything on it is something we would happily eat ourselves.
